2024/2025
Autumn Term: Charity Matters
This term we are working as a charitable organisation. We are called ‘Charity Matters’. We put up posters asking for donations for a pop up charity shop. We received a letter from an old lady who lived in a local care home. She had some donations to give, but needed us to talk to her about what charity we are raising money for. When we spoke to the lady we discovered that she had an old shop in London which had been closed for several years because she was getting too old to work. Her shop used to be a charity shop and she raised money for the Battersea Dogs home. She offered us the shop to use and in return, she asked for money raised to be given to The Battersea Dogs Home like herself. We were very excited by this and went to London to explore the property. It needed a bit of repair as it had not been used for some time. When we were sorting it out, we discovered a chest of items which had been saved from The Great Fire of London, 1666. We went back in time to explore what happened and why.
Spring Term: Regency Building Company
This term we are called Regency Building Company. We are experts at building and construction - no job too big or small! We received a mastery building award, after which we received a special commission from National Heritage Buildings. They asked us to renovate an old derelict hospital into a new nursing home. We sketched and created plans to be approved. There were lots of jobs to be done and it was going to take a long time to get the building and the garden sorted. With our safety equipment on, we checked out the building work to be done. There were concerns from the local residents about the noise and threat to damaging animal habitats. We reassured them that we were kind and careful builders. When we started our work at the hospital, we found an old storage room containing old hospital equipment. We discovered a plaque saying ‘Nightingale Lodge - founded in 1842’. We found out about Florence Nightingale and thought that perhaps she had opened up this hospital. We kept the old part of the hospital storeroom and turned it into a nursing museum displaying lots of old nursing equipment.
Summer Term: Go Wild - ‘wild watchers’
We discovered an advert from WWF asking for volunteers to travel the world researching endangered animals. We wanted to help and are worried about the animals becoming extinct.
2023/2024
Term 1: International mountain rescuers are at the ready! What equipment do we need? What are the different terrains we will have to be confident in? What happens when someone is injured? We are proud about winning an award but our greatest challenge is yet to come. A village in Iceland has called and we are on our way...
Term 2: With a branch of the Great Oak crashing to the ground in a storm, the team of conservationists needs to work out what is the best course of action. The whole village gets involved and there is advice and ideas from all sides. An archaeologist, the vicar, a wood sculptor... should we let the tree slowly die, is it safe for residents, and why are flowers growing so well around the trunk. A discovery of a children's tin of artifacts in the disrupted soil takes us back to the 1960s and 70s and the moon landings. Will the tree be designated a tree of historical significance?
Term 3: Aqua Splash Media company are having a very busy time. They receive regular requests from magazines and tourism countries; we can hardly keep up! One day it is producing a diagram of a fish for a children's science publication, another it is designing a treasure hunt for Bawdsey to try to increase visitors this summer. We leap into action when a whale is discovered, washed up on Bawdsey beach, when we are researching the area. Where has it come from? Can we get it back into the sea before it dies? We become renowned for our conservation posters and knowledge around sea pollution and so the Museum of London has got in touch about putting together something for their new Thames exhibition. But what has that got to do with pollution and why do we have to feature a drainage engineer?
Next year KS1 is going to benefit from learning in two main rooms rather than one. Becky will be the class teacher and Joy will have oversight of the Year 1 learning zone in the mornings. Gaynor, Sophie and Laura will be on hand to support and the class will also be taught by Trish (PE), Sarah (French) and Alice (music).
